Designer Childrenswear Proliferates, Economy Be Damned

Suri. Effing. Cruise.

We’re heading into a New Year, coming off the worst holiday shopping season in some 40 years, with Chanel pretty much in crisis, retailers taking a rain check on couture, and everyone in the business of selling clothes very, very scared. But the clothing market is not wholly doomed for 2009, as this generation of kids has set out to be the chicest yet. Designer childrenswear is outperforming womenswear in the economic downturn. WWD boldly proclaims that the category is experiencing “bullish year-on-year growth.” Why? “There are a lot fewer kids’ brands than adult brands so there’s space to fill, and there’s a whole mini-me [phenomenon] going on where women want to see their kids as extensions of themselves,” ex-Bonpoint designer and artistic director Domitille Brion says. Another kids’-fashion-market analyst cites plateauing birthrates as a reason for the baby-fashion boom, as well as the increased number of career moms with more disposable income.

Barneys New York’s top-selling kids lines include Phillip Lim Kids, Little Ella Moss, John Galliano, and Little Marc Jacobs. Naturally, many other designer labels are expanding tot offerings.

&#8226 Jean Paul Gaultier plans to launch a kids’ line next fall.
&#8226 Acne launched a kids’ line last fall. The label’s co-founder says making kids’-store display windows “is so much fun.”
&#8226 Surface to Air’s kids’ line for the rebellious set, called Fangs, includes organic T-shirts, sweatshirts, and jeans illustrated by Gordan Hull and will hit racks this spring.
&#8226 Anne Valérie Hash launched a kids’ collection (one little mohair coat: about $500).
&#8226 Moschino’s kids’ collection will include three categories, Baby, Kid, and Teen, and hit retail stores in July.
&#8226 Antonio Marras has been appointed artistic director of Kenzo’s kids’ line. His first line is for fall 2009.
&#8226 Lacoste is developing a more fashion-forward kids’ line due out in the spring. Also in the works: a limited-edition kids’ line (because kids’ clothes make great collectors’ items).
&#8226 Burberry will open free-standing kids’ stores in places like New York, Hong Kong, and Palo Alto, California, which sound like the cutest thing ever.
&#8226 Blumarine opened its first kids’ shop in Harrods this summer and then two Miss Blumarine flagships in the Ukraine.
&#8226 D&G’s kids’ sales rose by 30 percent in 2008.
&#8226 Bonpoint is launching a kids’ beauty line in the spring and will possibly open kids’ spas.
&#8226 Phoebe Philo just took over design for Celine, and might launch a kids’ line for the house.

No word on how much of this stuff is machine-washable, which is a frightening, frightening thought. (Though now might be a good time for out-of-work bankers to consider opening dry-cleaning businesses.) We all know who we have to blame for this scary proliferation: Suri Cruise. We think we heard on E! or some such that she’s now more photographed than her parents, undoubtedly for “her” fashion sense. No better message to send to the Über-young and impressionable than the one that image is everything. Just imagine the cover of Us Weekly in twenty years &#8212 “Downfall of a Baby Fashionista.” Hey, we are just fine entering old age with the advent of tween rehab.

This face could be drinking coffee at a Starbucks near you right now. (Though he’s most likely hung-over in bed somewhere warm. Damn him.)

It’s Official: Man Skirts Have Reached the Mainstream, or At Least Dear Abby

He’s got legs…

Guys, are you still fashioning your resolutions? May we be of some assistance? Perhaps it’s time to put your insecurities and fears aside and think, WWMD. Yes, indeed, What would Marc do? Everyone’s favorite designer was on a mission in 2008 to single-handedly make the man skirt acceptable and, yes, chic. And, sure, people scoffed. But secretly, men wondered if they could carry off the look. (It’s okay to admit it. We think men have great legs for this sort of thing.) And now, courtesy of none other than Dear Abby, we have proof that the look has reached the widest parts of mainstream society.

Joe in Pennsylvania writes in:

DEAR ABBY: My problem is unusual, but I’m hoping if you address it in your column it will help. I’m a married man, confident in who I am, who wears skirts for comfort. I feel skirts are more comfortable than pants, which I find tight, restrictive and uncomfortable. I wear skirts around the house, when I’m out running errands and when I attend church. My clergyman has raised no objection to it…

…Our problem is some family members who disagree have talked behind our backs, started rumors and turned people against us with false information. How can I make them understand that they are entitled to their belief, but that they shouldn’t gossip and create problems for us because I am not doing anything wrong?

Oh boo to gossip. Abby’s response: “As long as you have the testicular fortitude and shapely enough legs to wear skirts, then you have my blessing.” And we have to agree. So, men, break out the kilts, sarongs, man skirts (anything but a mini really) and have at it: 2009 is the year to show off your gams.

Prom Fashion: The Jacket Edge

It’s dress-up time. For prom, the options are endless, but making a look your own — with, say, a mix of feminine and tough-girl pieces — is a good way to go.

Alejandro Ingelmo Wants a Strong, Powerful Woman in His Shoes

With his super-sexy, fiercely edgy, modern designs, Alejandro Ingelmo is the man to watch when it comes to high-fashion footwear. He’s got shoes in his blood — four generations of his family have worked in the business in his native Cuba. Madonna wore a pair of heels for her H&M campaign, Jeffrey requested that he produce a men’s collection, and he most recently was a CFDA/Vogue finalist. Lucky for us, he slowed down his rollercoaster ride just long enough to talk about his dedication to both quality and his BlackBerry.

Generations of your family have worked in the shoe business. Did you always want to be a shoe designer, or did you just fall into it?
It was actually the last thing on my mind. I had wanted to go to design school since I was young, but not necessarily fashion. I went to Parsons and explored different things, such as design and pattern cutting and then shoe design, and realized it came naturally to me. Admittedly my grandfather’s great understanding of craftsmanship and quality has really influenced my mentality towards design.

From where do you source your materials? Is it hard to get access to good resources as a younger label?
I source everything from Italy, all my leather. When you start out, you want to make a mark, and one of the biggest challenges was getting access to good materials.

What is the inspiration behind your designs? How would you describe your direction or aesthetic?
I don’t really think in terms of inspiration. For me it’s all about “the new” — new materials, new textures. My creations are very forward. It’s an edgy aesthetic, very strong, very sexy, very modern.

What type of woman wears Alejandro Ingelmo shoes?
She is a modern woman. She is not the type to be at home cleaning and cooking! She has a powerful position in the world.

What’s in your future?
To keep on. I have just started doing bags — a small collection of clutches for spring/summer, which will develop into a full bag range.

What trends right now do you like?
I don’t follow trends, but if anything, I like what’s going on with women’s fashion. The boxy shapes and the extremes — as seen at Gareth Pugh. I think it’s where we are moving towards.

What trends do you wish would just go away?
Prints. I think they are just a way of disguising bad fabrics. I love to see the use of bold color and good fabric and stitching.

What do you think every woman should have in her wardrobe?
You know what I am going to say! A good pair of shoes!

Which designers do you wear yourself?
Dior Homme, Tim Hamilton shirts, my own shoes. I actually just bought a Dior Homme suit for the CFDA because I didn’t own one!

What is the one item you can’t live without?
Starbucks coffee, my BlackBerry!

Take a Gander at Karl Lagerfeld’s Vermont Home in the New Chanel Campaign

Chanel’s spring 2009 campaign is out! It stars Heidi Mount, the 21-year-old Salt Lake City native and rising star who also fronts the house’s resort ads. Landing the Chanel campaign is like winning a modeling Oscar. For one, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, and Freja Beha have all been there. And the lucky girl gets to live, breathe, and work next to Karl Lagerfeld himself. Mount even got to chill with him at his new house in Vermont where he shot the ads. We’re not surprised Mount landed the gig. She opened the label’s spring show in October, and just weeks after that, her resort campaign dropped. Lagerfeld also shot the rising star for couture spreads in Harper’s Bazaar and Numéro. But we’re wondering &#8212 is Karl’s house really this empty? Where’s all the fabulous furniture? Click through to see more from the campaign.
