H&M and Mango Expand; Bloomingdale’s to See Young Designers

We wouldn’t mind looking like this post-baby.

&#8226 Bloomingdale’s is hosting its first open-sees, starting next month, for designers to come show their stuff to buyers. Bendel has been doing these since the sixties, discovering designers like Todd Oldham and Anna Sui in the process. Who needs Project Runway? [WWD]

Let’s Talk About Jill Biden’s Clothes for a Change

We’re going to mention Michelle Obama and the clothes she’s worn in this post, but we’re not going show you any pictures of her. This entry is devoted to a lady who has graciously stood in the long, long shadow cast by Michelle and her Thakoon and her Narciso and her H&M and her Jason Wu. This woman has been there all along with the Obamas and her husband (Can I Call You) Joe, smiling, looking tan, holding hands with Michelle here and there, and being generally lovely. Her clothes have been generally pretty lovely, too. Now that we’ve had some distance from Michelle and Wu, let’s take a moment to appreciate Jill Biden and her fashion sense, from the campaign trail to the White House &#8212 er, Number One Observatory Circle. Reminisce about that which you probably never noticed, in the slideshow.

Stars and Stripes… Pilati Will Spread the Love…

French President Nicolas Sarkozy decorates designers Sonia Rykiel and Jean-Louis Scherrer.

The Sarko Effect

Michelle Obama may have replaced her as fashion’s—make that the world’s—favorite First Lady, but the arrival of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy at Sidaction’s annual Dîner de la Mode on Thursday night still sent a frisson of excitement through Paris’ Pavillon d’Armenonville. The appearance of her husband, President Sarkozy, brought a crowd that included Olivier Theyskens, Giambattista Valli, Diane Kruger, Vanessa Paradis, and Laetitia Casta to its feet. “Few times have I been able to actually feel the glamour in a room,” sighed Milla Jovovich, who was sitting with Elie Saab. “But this was one of them.”

Once France’s First Family was seated, the night’s program began with a toast from chairman Pierre Bergé, in which he celebrated Bruni-Sarkozy as “an incredible woman who has agreed to be a part of this incredible organization.” Bruni-Sarkozy herself came next, taking the stage in a slinky strapless Yves Saint Laurent dress and whispering about how important the fight against AIDS is to her personally, particularly because her own brother passed away in 2006 from the disease. Two more speeches followed, including one by MAC president John Demsey.

Naturally, the fashion flock spent the better part of the evening in the smoking lounge. “Who eats at these things, anyway?” Lou Doillon asked, as she mingled among the likes of Lara Stone, Sasha Pivovarova, Olivier Zahm, and Dita Von Teese. The night’s real fun, in fact, was a silent auction in which €300 bought you a bundle of envelopes in which one chit for a corresponding prize was hidden. Long after most guests had filed into a nearby club for an official after-party, Christian Lacroix was still on the paper chase, insisting he wouldn’t leave until he found a winning ticket. But then, at a charity gala like this one, isn’t everybody a winner?

We Applaud Lady Gaga’s Latex Abomination

Notice how she changed her sunglasses? We kind of love that.

Bravo, Lady Gaga. Pop’s most fabulous catastrophe went out in London last night with Marc Ronson, and she took our advice and wore bottoms. Real bottoms &#8212 not even tights she wishes were pants, but a full-on pencil skirt. Her entire outfit might look like it’s made from condoms, but this is progress. More on her fashion philosophy from the Daily Mail:

‘A girl’s got to use what she’s given and I’m not going to make a guy drool the way a Britney video does,’ she said.

‘So I take it to extremes. I don’t say I dress sexily on stage – what I do is so extreme. It’s meant to make guys think: “I don’t know if this is sexy or just weird.” ‘

We’re not guys, but we’re going with the latter. Now we just need to teach her that she can wear tops and bottoms together. Yes you can, Lady G. Yes you will.

Meet the New Guy: Lenz von Johnston

Prada exclusives go from new faces to top models in a heartbeat. That’s what happened to Ali Stephens and Suvi Koponen, and now Munich native Lenz von Johnston joins their ranks. The 21-year-old was discovered two years ago by makeup artist Mo May while on a movie set. At her insistence he gave modeling a shot, and Cento Scouting snapped him up immediately. Just a year later, Miuccia put an exclusive on the pouty teen for her fall 2008 runway show. Then Calvin picked him up as their face for fall 2008. We even picked his V spread, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, as one of the best editorials in November. But what we love most about this ice-hockey fan is his love for Klaus Kinski. Who could guess?

Model Profile: Lenz von Johnston
