Michelle Obama Mixes Patterns in Copenhagen

Michelle Obama wore a black-and-white-patterned dress and jacket to Copenhagen today to bid for Chicago to host the summer Olympics in 2016. The jacket was a polka-dot pattern and the dress was a square pattern. Maybe it’s part of her plan to dizzy and hypnotize the committee. See the full look in the Michelle Obama Look Book.

Lindsay Lohan Working Hard at Ungaro in Advance of Runway Show

And she still looks good, too. Some women just have it all.

On Sunday, Emanuel Ungaro presents its spring 2010 collection in Paris. It will be the first under artistic adviser — a title that might never hurt to type before this name — Lindsay Lohan, and designer Estrella Archs. In addition to “kind of [overseeing] everything [Archs] does,” Ungaro CEO Mounir Mouffarige hired Lindsay because she is a walking advertisement for the brand. Publicity without the help of a publicist! But Lindsay must be working overtime, sacrificing sleep and fun and time with her friends and family, because it seems she is now going above and beyond her job description and literally acting as a publicist for the label. In several carefully crafted Tweets she has invited Lily Allen, Charlotte Ronson, Sarah Silverman, and Miley Cyrus to her show in Paris. And by her show we mean the collection she designed. Behold the tweet invite to Miley:

@mileycyrus will you be in Paris this week? would you like to come to the Emanuel Ungaro show for the new collection i’ve designed love? xo*

And if that’s not hard enough work for you, know that Lindsay has, again according to her Twitter, just seen her office at Emanuel Ungaro in Paris. “It’s so pretty! I was shocked&so happy I cried!!! A dream come true!” she tweets. This can only mean she has been designing the spring 2010 collection while doing all her other work all around the world. She’s probably sketching from the plane, FedEx-ing fabric samples left and right, dashing from mill to fabulous party to conference call to pattern-maker. She’s taken the slash occupation to a whole new level: high-fashion designer/publicist/tweeter/jet-setter/actress/leggings designer/spray-tan maker/workaholic wonder woman. Hopefully she’s jetting off to Mustique for a few quiet days of relaxation and plush robes after the show, because she has earned it.

Enormously Wealthy Ajman Sheikh Closing In on Lacroix Deal

Lacroix’s fall 2009 couture collection.

Italy’s Borletti Group has decided not to make a bid for Christian Lacroix, the fashion house that went bankrupt and nearly crumbled right before the fall 2009 couture shows. With the Italians out of the way, an Ajman sheikh is now closing in on a deal to acquire the label. And things look pretty serious: Hassan bin Ali al-Nuaimi has made what officials call an “overall very satisfactory” offer and is close to finalizing the deal. Maurizio Borletti confessed that after mulling over his offer for three months, “the conditions for confirming this takeover were not brought together.” Lacroix has never made a profit in its 22-year history, so perhaps he couldn’t see a way to once and for all make money on those flouncy embroidered dresses?

Al-Nuaimi, nephew of a ruler of Ajman in the United Arab Emirates, is prepared to inject 70 million euros (his happy-birthday check?) into the house, allowing it to retain its staff. Borletti hopes to facilitate a quick end to the deal between the label and the rich ruler’s nephew. Perhaps this fellow has some connection to that couture client who offered to write Lacroix a check to stave off bankruptcy, which Lacroix declined. Except now administrators are involved to tell him to take the money already. Al-Nuaimi still has to beat out bids by France’s Bernard Krief Consulting and the Financiere Saint-Germain holding company, but Lacroix’s talks with those companies don’t sound nearly as serious.

Gilt Groupe Accused of Phony Markdowns

Rapidly expanding sample-sale site Gilt Groupe has been accused of lying about the deals they offer on designer clothes. As you can see, Gilt Groupe said the scarf pictured here retailed for $300, and offered nearly 60 percent off with the new price of $128. However, one blogger found the same scarf at Neiman Marcus for a retail price of $195. Racked suggests Gilt got the $300 figure from Sofia Cashmere, but even so, $105 is a huge difference. Perhaps shoppers should approach Gilt like T.J. Maxx. Of course savvy shoppers question the original price, age, and everything else about products in that store, right down to the chocolate-covered peppermint patties at the cash wrap. But on Gilt Groupe, there are no cheap plastic hangers and glass cases full of fragrances of questionable origin to make customers think twice.

Limi Feu RTW Spring 2010

Limi Yamamoto continued to crib from her father’s codes for spring.

Best Bet: Earth to Phillip Lim

A lot of labels are embracing ecofriendly fashion right now. And while we aren’t covering ourselves in head-to-toe organic cotton, we’re all about reducing our carbon footprint. Which is why we love Phillip Lim’s new embroidered tank, part of his Go Green Go collection of organic clothes sold at Barneys New York. Not only is the fabric environmentally friendly, but the mauve color and earth-tone hues remind us of the palette the designer used for his fall 2009 collection. The neck embellishments also draw inspiration from the runway, but we like how this tank offers a much more everyday, affordable — and, of course, green — option.

$150 at Barneys.com.
