The Diarist of a Scene That Never Gets Old
A Letter to Kelis About Her Donkey Costume
Dear Kelis,
You look like an ass. Don’t take that the wrong way, but you look like a donkey in this costume, and it is purely owing to the clothes rather than your lovely figure. It pains us to break the news to you, because we and the rest of the fashion world covet those Alexander McQueen hooves shoes on your feet, and have sick dreams in the night about putting them on and trying to walk around the city in them. That said, we must all look up to you for wearing these shoes out and not falling down, a task previously accomplished by Daphne Guinness and Lady Gaga. Yet therein lies your problem: You are not Lady Gaga, and this attempt at avant-garde fashion doesn’t compare to her get-ups. The ears crown of fake thorns on your head is like a sad attempt at Gaga’s signature bird’s nest for the face or unicorn hairdo. And the latex bodysuit is so close to your skin tone you look almost naked, which is how an animal might frolic through a field. And the gray tail — an astounding Über-trend fusion of gray hair and the ponytail braid — might make a great whip for unruly party guests, or lasso for the bartender when the open bar gets too hectic, but generally distracts from everything else you have to offer. Especially the shoes, which should be the stars of this ensemble. You don’t have to try to one-up Lady Gaga’s style to be successful! It might get you attention, but have confidence that your other gifts are worthy of shining more brightly.

Johnny Weir to Switch to Faux Fur After Death Threats
This week, figure skater Johnny Weir came under fire for wearing a costume with a tuft of real fur on the shoulder. His costume designer came under fire, too, which Weir found severely upsetting, yet not upsetting enough to renounce real fur outright. However, now that he has received hate mail and death threats, he’s switching the real fur on the costume in question to a faux variety. He doesn’t want the animal-rights people to mess him up at the Olympics, which is exactly why we suggested he make nice with them the other day. We’ve seen the havoc they wreak at Fashion Week, and he would have no chance of maintaining his poker face if they stormed the ice yelling, wearing suits that make them look like skinned rabbits.

More Designers Migrate to Milk This Fashion Week
A disturbing trend has taken hold of the Tents this season. The Kardashians are showing their Bebe line there next month during Fashion Week. QVC will stage a runway show in the Tents with an overly complicated seating and bathroom procedure. And though it’s taking place in the Bryant Park Hotel, Spanx are showing their new women’s and men’s (yes, man Spanx are happening) lines during Fashion Week, too. So that whole geographic region of Fashion Week is going downhill. Bryant Park? Well, we can think of another kind of park it’s calling to mind more and more lately!
So it makes sense that Milk Studios will have even more shows this season than last season, as designers increasingly choose to show there, where it’s cool, instead of at the Tents, where it’s less so. Milk will have 32 presentations and shows during Fashion Week, up from 25 last season. Additionally, Montauk’s Surf Lodge is setting up a pop-up restaurant, “with chef Sam Talbot debuting new delicacies for a Thursday-through-Sunday menu,” according to WWD. Gwen Stefani is hosting a cocktail party there. McQ by Alexander McQueen is showing there. BMW is sponsoring. And what’s going to happen when Fashion Week moves to Lincoln Center in September? Fashion people seem to have an innate fear of uptown, so Milk’s Fashion Week could grow even more.

Evan Lysacek Is Vera Wang’s New Figure-Skating Muse
The fashion world of male figure skating is particularly fraught, having a much-mocked reputation for sparkly unitards, not to mention Johnny Weir’s fur debacle. But World Champion Evan Lysacek, whom we profiled in this week’s magazine, has paired up with designer Vera Wang to try to create a more fashion-forward image for the sport. Wang, a former figure skater herself, who also designed costumes for Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan, has taken Lysacek on as her newest ice skating muse. She designed the sleek mock tuxedo he wore during his World Championship win.
We visited Wang’s showroom during a fitting with Lysacek, in which he tried on two different outfits: one, a black unitard with silver bejeweled snakes, and the other, also all black but covered in subtle sequin stripes and anchored with feathers near his hands. “Evan has such a great eye,” Wang told us, as she studied Lysacek, standing with his arms outstretched. “It’s much more complicated than you’d think,” she said. “You have to make sure he can move and bend and all the pieces stay anchored on.” Lyacek was flanked by two tailors, pinning another snake to his costume. “Vera’s been such a good mentor to me, and she knows so much about skating,” said Lysacek. “As far as our style, we kind of have the same aesthetic and taste in clothing, the same thought about movement and character. We almost had too many ideas. These are the ones we started working on when we first started together, and now they’re now finally ready,” he said.
Wang tries to attend Lysacek’s competitions herself to make last-minute adjustments, but if she can’t go, she sends one of her trusty tailors. “My worst nightmare is that something goes wrong with the costume that makes Evan fall or get distracted,” she said, which is why the tailors spend extra time securing the feathers to Lysacek’s sleeves. “If I have to wear something, I’m going to wear something a top designer would do for me,” said Lysacek, gazing proudly at Wang. Johnny Weir’s “Poker Face” routine can’t quite top that.

What Do You Think of Stella McCartney’s Puppy Campaign?
Natalia Vodianova stars in Stella McCartney’s spring 2010 campaign, which features a real animal instead of the cartoon animals of the last season. The Dalmatian stands in strong defiance to fashion’s new obsession with cats in all their fancy. [Fashin]
