Meet the New Girl: Kelsey Van Mook

Kelsey Van Mook (Next) at Pringle of Scotland.

After two years of waiting in the wings for a major breakthrough, 20-year-old Kelsey Van Mook is finally getting her due. Next Models signed the Vancouver native in 2007, but it took opening the fall 2009 Givenchy show in Paris for her career to really kick off. The willowy model recently worked with photographer Nathaniel Goldberg for DKNY’s spring campaign, and she also signed a lucrative fragrance contract with Givenchy’s Dance. In addition, she strutted down the spring 2010 catwalks for Burberry, Chanel, D&G, and Yves Saint Laurent. Next up: spreads in V magazine and Vogue España.

Kate Moss Was Just Kidding About Those Gray Streaks

Kate Moss went to a party Wednesday night with freshly dyed gray streaks in her hair. But apparently those weren’t permanent. Yesterday she was spotted leaving the Balmain boutique in Paris with her hair entirely back to blonde. Given her fleeting attachment to the gray highlights, maybe fashion freaks won’t run out and copy them as they do Moss’s every style statement. This would be a relief because, as with shorts and tights, it remains to be seen whether gray highlights can truly do the average person any favors (though we’re going with probably not). But perhaps it’s worth noting this: She has been spotted out in white jackets at least three times over the last week. She and Mary J. Blige have more in common than we thought!

Beyoncé Will Reportedly Rescue Lady Gaga in ‘Telephone’ Video, Clad in Destroyed Denim

A lifetime of waiting for this moment, folks.

Lady Gaga and Beyoncé are shooting the video for “Telephone” in L.A. today. The video is reportedly a continuation of Gaga’s “Paparazzi” video, her epic collaboration with director Jonas Akerlund that made way for her to dangle onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards smeared up to her eyeballs with fake blood, after dance-hobbling around with a cane. But unlike “Paparazzi,” “Telephone” is not about a broken heart and trying to make a man love you. It’s about the opposite — trying to get your man to leave you the hell alone so you can focus on dancing and getting drunk in the club at the same time. The concept for the video reportedly involves Gaga getting imprisoned and Beyoncé rescuing her. As for their costumes, which are what’s really important here, the divas are said to be wearing “destroyed denim pieces” by designers Franc Fernandez and Oscar Olima. Spring’s denim explosion has been tough to accept, and downright weird much of the time, but if anyone can do the opposite for the material of what Jessica Beil did for it on the cover of Vogue, it’s Gaga and her friend Beyoncé, who owes it to the world to explore just how skimpy cutoffs can get.

According to early reports, Beyoncé may not dance in the video. At first this seems like a crime against humanity, but it’s probably only fair. Lady Gaga respectfully put her masks and crazy body stockings aside to wear a plain white leotard in Beyoncé’s “Videophone” video. Gaga has said she told Beyoncé prior to shooting, “I don’t want to show up in some frickin’ hair bow and be fashion Gaga in your video … I want to do you.” Because fashion is where Gaga outshines Beyoncé … and pretty much everyone. Shaking it is where Beyoncé outshines Gaga … and pretty much everyone. (Review the scene in “Video Phone” where they dance side by side if you doubt us.) So perhaps she owes it to Gaga to let her hips lie just this once.

Project Runway Tries to Do Couture

We begin in typical Project Runway fashion: Jesus talks about himself in the third person and Ping acts silly and forgets her shoes. Oh, Ping. Get it together. Heidi tells the group that they’re going to meet some of the most iconic fashion designers of all time, without specifying whom, and we’re pretty sure it’s a gimmick — this is Lifetime, after all. The contestants arrive at the Met, and Tim is standing next to ten looks taken from the Costume Institute. How funny would it be if someone tripped and ripped a dress? Ping, we’re looking at you! Tim informs us that the designers will be working in teams of two, which everyone is pained to hear, and that they’ll have $500 to create a high-end signature look that could fit in with the Costume Institute lineup by YSL, Balenciaga, and Dior, among others. Madame Grès looks at Jesus and rolls her eyes from couture heaven. Janeane (JaneJane without the J!) says that being so close to these dresses makes her want to cry, which isn’t surprising, since she’s a crier. “I feel the same way!” says Tim. Aw. When he says it, it’s cute. Sorry, JaneJane without the J.

So the teams are: Jay and Maya, Jesus and Amy, Seth Aaron and Anthony, Janeane and Ben, Mila and Jonathan, Emilio and Anna, and Ping and Jesse. Working on a team is hard. There are power struggles and personality clashes, and Project Runway, thankfully, milks these conflicts for all they’re worth. Mila and Jonathan have some tension because Mila only wants to work on her coat, leaving Jonathan to do everything else. Anthony and Seth Aaron actually work together pretty well, though Anthony gets frustrated with Seth Aaron’s indecision. And then there’s Ping and Jesse, the hilarious odd couple of the bunch. Jesse can’t stand Ping’s disorganization and general ditziness — he menacingly punches his fist in his hands a couple of times in frustration. Don’t hit Ping, Jesse! Though she is SO annoying. Ping loses her sketchbook and then her money and then comes back from Mood with a hooker-esque fabric. The twist! The designers have to create a second look, inspired by someone else’s first look (confusing, especially if you’re a recapper), and only get $50 to do it. This seems pointless. The guest judge this week is British designer Matthew Williamson, who makes stuff like this. Ping is late to come down to the runway, and Tim has to pull an “Aaaaalllvin!” on her. “Piiiiing!” he yells. She finally comes, only to be dismissed forever. Poor Ping. Let’s see the designs.

Love Magazine Loves Nude Covers

The next issue of Love has three different covers, featuring full-frontal shots of three different models in the same pose with equally little coverage. They are the 26-year-old Lara Stone, 19-year-old Jeneil Williams, and 43-year-old Kristen McMenamy, whose cover just leaked (Lara and Jeneil’s leaked earlier). The issue is Love’s third, and the third to boast naked cover subjects. The first issue featured a nude Beth Ditto, who later said the magazine Photoshopped her to make her look fatter than she really is. The second issue featured two covers, one of which depicted unknown bass player Alex Hartley shirtless, his pants resting just below his hips. Is it impossible to launch and sell a new magazine without naked people on the cover these days? And not only naked people, but people who are as naked as they can be without the cover veering into Purple territory? We love Love, but as a fashion magazine; after all, it is primarily about the many ways one might attire oneself.
