Skin-Flashing Face-off: Ed Westwick vs. Taylor Momsen

Gossip Girl was filming in the meatpacking district yesterday, and not shockingly, two of the show’s stars found ways to flash some skin. Ed Westwick left his loafer-clad feet sock-free and accessorized his curve-hugging jeans and preppy cable-knit sweater with chest hair for maximum smarminess. Taylor Momsen, on the other hand, went for an asymmetrical minidress with lacing up the thigh.

Who bared it better: Taylor or Ed?

An Upper West Side Synagogue Is Offering Free Fashion Week Services!

This year, many Fashion Week–goers will have to make an important choice: fashion or Judaism? The High Holidays begin on sundown on September 8, the night before Fashion Week officially begins, although Fashion Week in New York has pretty much been stretched to a two-week affair with smaller labels and Jessica Simpson trying to piggyback on the excitement leading up to Fashion Week. An Upper West Side synagogue, Chabad of the West 60s, announced it will hold free Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services so fashion people can pop over form Lincoln Center to pray in their finest, for their finest.

“New York’s renowned fashion week begins on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, and many Jews may be conflicted between synagogue and Fashion Week. We want everyone to attend synagogue, and as such, only a block away, special services will be held for Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur. We are offering free Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur tickets to anyone attending services at our synagogue this year, and asking only that they use what they would have spent to buy fashion to support New York’s economy,” said Rabbi Yehuda Lipsker of Chabad of the West 60s.

Special classes will be offered throughout the Jewish holidays discussing the roles of famous Jews in fashion, and a special prayer will be said for the Jewish designers (including Zac Posen, Diane Von Furstenberg, and others) to succeed at fashion week.

And when it’s all done they can go back to sinning in the tents with all those fun open bars.

The People Who Made Katy Perry’s Light-Up Met Gala Dress Just Came Out With a Cell-Phone Dress

Cute Circuit turned Katy Perry into the scab of this year’s Met Gala, dressing her in a gown that lit up like some sort of undiscovered deep-sea octopus. In their quest to continue fusing fashion with technology, the label has come out with a dress that doubles as a cell phone and functions like a land line. To answer the phone, you raise your arm, and to hang up, you drop your arm to your side. All you have to do is stick your SIM card in the sleeve. But it might come with unknown health hazards, depending on whether or not you believe your cell phone is giving you cancer.

The antenna, described as “super-tiny”, is stitched into the bottom hem of the dress, which rests at about knee-height, to reduce the amount of radiation that the wearer is exposed to.

And of course you can’t text or BBM or watch YouTube or chronicle every part of your life with an app in this garment. But you can look like a crazy person talking to her own hand.

French Vogue’s October Issue Will Be Gigantic

Screw September! The October issue of French Vogue, never one to do what the other guys were doing for the sake of fitting in, will total 622 pages. Carine Roitfeld favorite Lara Stone will appear on the cover of this issue, which marks the magazine’s 75th anniversary and hits newsstands September 10. The issue brick includes:

• 276 pages of ads, which is 110 pages more than last year’s October issue.
• 104 pages of congratulations from all kinds of designers, because fashion loves a back scratch.
• 150 pages of features, shot by photographers like Mario Sorrenti, David Sims, Terry Richardson, Steven Klein, Hedi Slimane, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.
• Inès de la Fressange’s 11-year-old daughter modeling the little black dress (shot by Slimane). Because what else would Inès’s daughter do at 11? Swing over a pit of gravel?

And people who are in France can buy the issue bundled with a “portfolio of oversize photographs from the nine decades, all unbound on thick paper and ready to frame,” according to WWD. French people get the best of everything. You know you want this on your wall.

BIG EASY [WWD]

Here Are Some Stick-On Bangs

Don’t have the confidence to just cut your hair, which will grow back anyway? Try stick-on bangs! You wear them like Arden Wohl wears her headbands, but with the fringe sticking down instead of up. So if that hurricane hits this weekend, you can make a set of these — mixing your own dye and everything — instead of going to the beach. [Crushable]

Gaby Basora Loves a Good Fashion ‘Don’t’

Tucker designer Gaby Basora was stopped by New York’s Look Book almost five years ago, wearing a khaki Barbara Bui jumpsuit to pick up her kids from school (way ahead of her time, that one). “I wear whatever the hell I want,” she explained then. These days, Basora’s style is a bit more refined: She mixes her own collection of printed silk blouses and dresses with eclectic vintage-store finds. After opening a short-lived Lower East Side boutique last year, Basora was approached to do a Target collaboration, which launches September 12.

Though she’s one of the youngest labels to design for the megachain, her splashy prints and timeless silhouettes have earned her a devoted following. “I’ve managed to establish a really niche, identifiable look,” she says. “This was an opportunity to offer the Tucker aesthetic to a huge audience.” Up next, the designer is collaborating with Brooklyn artist Rostarr on prints for spring 2011 and casting around for a new, larger storefront. We talked to Basora about her photographic inspiration for fall, her affinity for red-carpet misses, and her latest impulse buy.

How hard was it to translate your silks into a lower-priced line?
Surprisingly, it wasn’t the challenge I thought it would be. There was a handful of my signature styles that I wanted to include, and I was really happy with how they came out. I also got to do some pieces I’ve never done before, like this amazing fleece jumpsuit.

What was the inspiration for the Target collection?
Maria Schneider and Jack Nicholson in The Passenger. There was also this broader inspiration of iconic women, like Sophia Loren and Françoise Hardy. I like that easy vanity: taking someone who’s quite put-together and combining it with something more carefree.

Who are your favorite designers?
Dries Van Noten has such courage in mixing prints and textures; the unexpectedness is so interesting. And I love the drape of YSL — there’s something incredibly timely about his silhouettes.

What’s the first designer item you ever bought?
I bought a beautiful Army-green-and-gray striped sweater from Dolce & Gabbana in the early nineties. I had a traumatic parting with it: I was moving, and I put all my favorite clothes into one garbage bag, to move them last. My sister thought it was garbage and put it out on the street.

Where do you like to shop in New York?
I like to find obscure little vintage stores and antique shops. I do a lot of exploring — I ride my bike pretty much everywhere and pop into random stores. I found the headband that I wore at my wedding at an antique store on East 66th Street.

How would you describe your personal style?
Eclectic and kind of seventies-inspired. I ride my bike a lot, and I end up in pants more often than I wish — the long skirts tend to get caught in my wheel.

What trends are you appreciating right now?
Print mixing. I also love the palette right now: neutral blushes, beige, brown, and Army green.

What trends are you ready to see retired?
Whenever I see the fashion “don’ts” in magazines, I pretty much always love them. I like the “don’ts” more than the “dos.”

What’s one item you’re saving to buy?
I’m pretty impulsive. I bought myself an anniversary ring recently in L.A. It’s very masculine; it looks like a pinky ring, but I wear it on my ring finger. It reminds me of something my grandfather had, so I felt really connected to it.

What’s one item every woman should have in her closet?
A great undergarment, whether it’s a bodysuit, bra, or underwear. If you love the foundation, you’re going to feel good about whatever else goes on top.

What’s something you never leave the house without?
My bicycle — I pretty much ride year-round. I lived in Amsterdam when I was younger, and you develop this complete resiliency to ride straight into the wind.
