Lori Goldstein Wants to Write a Book, Patrick Robinson Thinks Too Many People in Fashion ‘Don’t Know Their Craft’

Lubov Azria, Teri Agins, Patrick Robinson, Lori Goldstein and Terron E. Schaefer.

Last night, Lincoln Center welcomed 125 public high-school students to hear from top fashion designers and industry leaders at the second annual Life in Fashion Forum, moderated by Wall Street Journal columnist Terry Agins. Panelists included the Gap’s Patrick Robinson, BCBG Max Azria CCO Lubov Azria, Saks executive vice-president Terron E. Schaefer, and celebrity sylist Lori Goldstein, who offered tips on how to land a gig as her intern. “If someone comes in for an interview wearing heels I get a little leery,” Goldstein advised. “It’s a down-and-dirty job. You have to be on the phone all day, you have to get the clothes in. Designers usually have one sample, and the whole industry is fighting for that one sample. This is not a nine-to-five. You need to have passion.”

After the discussion, we asked Goldstein about her upcoming projects. Is she working on a book, perchance? She admitted that she “wants to,” and has been gathering together all of her work and “going over things.” What would said hypothetical book be about? “People always say, ‘I want to be in fashion,’ and that’s a great thing, but what does that mean? [People have] seen the glamorous side, but not the day-to-day wonderful grind. That real insider information about the fashion industry isn’t out there yet. I’m excited to tell people about it,” she explained.

The other panelists also had wisdom to share. Some highlights from Lubov Azria, Terron E. Schaefer, and Patrick Robinson:

Lubov Azria on dressing Angelina Jolie for the SAG awards:

We brought three gowns to Angelina Jolie, and she wanted Brad to pick the gown. He’s an architect and he likes geometric cuts. She wore the blue gown that everyone thought was backwards, which it was. That was how Brad wanted it; he likes low backs.

Terron E. Schaefer on getting fired from his job at Harrods:

I thought there was this enormous opportunity in India to develop products, source products, and bring them to London. I had a whole team of people working with me on development in India, and Mohamed Al-Fayed [then the owner of Harrods] decided he didn’t want “the smell of curry” wafting through the entire store. He was worried that Harrods would smell like curry. So while I was in India, he called and said, “Don’t come back.” And I thought, “I can’t believe this.” The whole project went off the rails and never happened.

Patrick Robinson on kids these days:

There are too many people who come into the office looking for jobs, and they really don’t know their craft. They haven’t studied design, or how to put together a collection. On an interview, everyone should be able to answer the question “What do you want to do?” So many people cannot answer that question. If you love eveningwear, and you come in to interview at the Gap, I will not have a problem with that. You don’t have to play up the fact that Gap does more casual clothes, because there’s a position we can find for you if you’re passionate about that.

Lubov Azria on what not to do on an interview:

I hate when they start interviewing you. “So, how do you balance work and home?” One girl came in and said, “I’ll do windows, floors, and serve you breakfast.” I hired her.

Jennifer Lopez Looked Very Sparkly Last Night

Jennifer Lopez celebrated her new gig as the face legs of Gillette razors at last night’s Venus Goddess Fund for Education Campaign launch, where she wore a tiny sparkly skirt by Haute Hippie. She paired her disco-ball mini with a silky tan blouse, Louboutin platforms, and plenty of bronzer and baby oil.

Do you like this look? Or is it time for J.Lo to branch out from all things nude and sparkly?

Tights Are Windows to the Soul, According to The Wall Street Journal

What do these patterns mean?

Tights have traditionally taken a backseat to more exciting accessories, like bags or shoes or creepy shapewear for young girls. But lately, they’ve entered the fashion spotlight, thanks to a slew of designers who started rolling out patterned, rainbow-hued styles. The Wall Street Journal’s Christina Binkley tackled this trend — and its translation to the workplace — in a piece titled “What Your Legs Say About You.”

For instance, if you favor striped styles, or if you were a fan of Rodarte’s cobwebby legwear, you’re obviously a Tim Burton–worshipping Goth who is not to be trusted with other people’s finances. Patty Edwards, a frequent CNBC contributor and chief investment officer of Trutina Financial in Bellevue, Washington, notes, “If I walk into a brokerage and they look like Goth girl with multi-striped leggings, I’m not going to feel good leaving my money there.” (Although, in her office, she might let it slide: “I adore free spirits. I hire them all the time.”)

Meanwhile, if you’re trying to stay warm with a pair of thick wool tights, you can forget about that promotion: “Wearing sweater-knit tights, so reminiscent of school yards and pinafores, could buttonhole you as someone’s assistant,” Binkley cautions. Also, if you’re going to try fishnets or lace, she recommends wearing knee-high boots so that only a bit of tights are showing.

On the other hand, if you want to assert your dominance over your co-workers, Cincinnati-based image consultant Jill Haney advocates a nice shade of lavender:

At the headquarters of Procter & Gamble, one of her corporate clients, she says, a chic-but-conservative gray dress could be spiced up with purple hose. Purple, she notes, is a power color. And in most professions, the ultimate question is how powerful you look. “Set a standard for yourself,” says Ms. Whittaker, “and decide what sort of authority you want to have.”

Best Bet: Zara’s Pleated Dress

Valentine’s Day is approaching, and while there are plenty of festive frocks on the market, most seem to feature Kardashian levels of spandex or saccharine ruffles and lace. This cherry-hued Zara frock gives a nod to the holiday without going overboard. The slightly nipped-in waist and full pleats add some shape, while the wool fabric provides a bit of insulation against this slushy weather.

Zara seamed and pleated dress, $99.90 online.

It Was a Hoop-Earring Kind of Day for Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama returned to the White House from Sasha’s basketball game the other day wearing an oversize black sweater over black pants, which she tucked into buckled boots. The FLOTUS pulled her hair back and traded in the jeweled earrings she’s been wearing lately for a pair of hoops. See the full look in the Michelle Obama Look Book.
