Kevin Sharkey’s Chic Condo; the Best New Design Books for Fall

This edition of Design Hunting kicks off with my impressions from the only two shows I attended during New York Fashion Week: Ralph Lauren and Yeohlee. I also marvel at the chic apartment of Kevin Sharkey, pay a visit to the new Foster + Partners–designed Sperone Westwater gallery, round up my favorite new design books for fall, and meet with incredible potter Frances Palmer, who gave me a sneak peek at her new work for the Neue Galerie store. Click ahead to see a slideshow of those finds and more.

Tour the Studios of Jeremiah Goodman and Justen Ladda

For this edition of Design Hunting, I met with Bergdorf Goodman’s Nicholas Manville, the mastermind behind the store’s Decorative Home department. His latest coup is a grand showing of furniture and home accessories by French designer Jean Boggio. After that, I trooped over to the New York International Gift Fair for a peek at Dean Rhys-Morgan’s limited-edition giclée prints, and then down to the Lower East Side to tour the studio/apartment of artist Justen Ladda. I also visited Jeremiah Goodman’s Upper East Side studio/apartment (where he keeps an impressive closet full of Creamware!), discovered Made Goods’ recycled and found objects, unearthed a rare book of Babe Paley photos, and got an up-close look at a giant brocade nose. Click ahead to see photos of all of my design discoveries.

Cooper-Hewitt’s Awards Lunch With Michelle Obama and Tim Gunn

For this edition of Design Hunting, I traveled to Washington, D.C., for the Cooper-Hewitt’s National Design Awards luncheon; Michelle Obama was the honorary patron. The festivities included a cocktail party, a Teen Design Fair breakfast (featuring guest speaker Tim Gunn), and the luncheon itself, at which the First Lady delivered an impassioned speech. What a thrill! I also got a peek at photographer Priscilla Rattazzi’s delightful new book, Luna & Lola, and did some rubbernecking outside a Paul Smith window display. Click ahead to share in my latest design discoveries.

Fantastic Design Shops in Sag Harbor; Editta Sherman’s Bittersweet Birthday

In this edition of Design Hunting, we toured some of Long Island’s loveliest design shops (Bloom, Neo Studio, and the new wellNEST included), lunched at Tribeca’s Smith & Mills, and attended the 99th birthday party of photographer Editta Sherman. The latter was a bittersweet occasion, as it was also her farewell soirée to living and working (since 1949!) in her studio apartment, located above Carnegie Hall. The party was attended by several of the building’s former residents (Bill Cunningham, architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, photographer Josef Astor), all of whom have had to seek new digs after the Carnegie Hall Corporation won its battle to evict them and turn their rent-controlled pads into new offices and studios. Click ahead to see all those pics and more.

Your One and Only Chance to Sleep With Beyoncé

It’s been a busy two weeks for Design Hunting. Beyoncé and her mother, Tina Knowles, launched their first-ever bedding collection for the Deréon label. We were hoping to meet the divine pop star and her mom — didn’t happen — but we did get a full tour of all the fun new designs. In other news, David Rockwell launched his first collection for The Rug Company; Heidi Rosenau gave us a preview of The Frick Collection’s 75th anniversary show; we met Robyn Pocker of J. Pocker & Son, a family-owned framing business on the Upper East Side; and so much more. Click ahead to see a slideshow of our terrific design finds.

Donna Karan Design Philosophy: ‘If I Can’t Make Love in It, I Am Not Interested’

In the latest installment of Design Hunting, Wendy Goodman checks out the furniture and home offerings of two fashion legends, Donna Karan and Diane Von Furstenberg; heads out to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, for a behind-the-scenes tour of Design Within Reach darling Pigeontail’s studio; pays a visit to the inspirational Hispanic Society of America; and wraps up with a walk-through of gallerist Liz O’Brien’s new Upper East Side space.

Design Hunting at New York Design Week

Early May is the highlight of the design year in New York, with a two-week blizzard of shows, events, and parties from Brooklyn to the Javits Center, to the meatpacking district and beyond! The energy was great this time, as everyone rallied from the bleak fallout of recession with design that was more sustainable than that of years past, and often refreshingly subversive. I saw a ton of fun, innovative work at every price level across the city. Here are some highlights from my hunting.

Design Hunting Goes to the Milan Furniture Fair

Last week, New York design editor Wendy Goodman traveled to Milan to attend the Furniture Fair. Among the almost 2,500 designers who showed, she previewed work by Marcel Wanders, Charles Job, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Frederique Morrel, and many more. Just like the rest of Europe, Milan was afflicted by volcanic ash last week — so, with the airports closed, Wendy made her way to Rome to try to find a flight. (She made it back safely.) Click ahead to read about Wendy’s adventures in Milan, and see pictures of over 40 exciting new design pieces.
